Emotional Impact: A Personal Battle
Maria Helena, who was elected in 2020 with 408 votes as the eighth most-voted candidate in the city, has openly expressed how the incident has affected her deeply. In a statement, she revealed the immense pressure and emotional toll she has endured since the video surfaced.
“I filed a report because they are really tormenting me. It was a difficult time, but it is now over thanks to the people who are helping me and sending me messages,” she shared.
The councilwoman admitted that at her lowest point, she even considered taking her own life. “I thought about it several times,” she revealed, underscoring the devastating mental health impact such invasions of privacy can have.
Despite the challenges, Maria Helena has vowed to stay strong, saying, “I continue to hold my head high because this is my purpose.”
The Bigger Picture: A Common Attack on Women
In her statement, Maria Helena highlighted that incidents like hers are not isolated. Many women, especially those in public positions, face similar attacks. She described the experience as a form of digital harassment that unfairly targets women, exposing them to judgment and ridicule.
“It’s very difficult. It’s not easy to have your image shared on social media. People are pointing fingers,” she said.
Maria Helena’s words resonate with a larger issue—how society often stigmatizes women who become victims of such violations, rather than addressing the perpetrators of these crimes.
The Legal Angle: What the Law Says
The Civil Police in Colíder, led by officer Breno Houly Palmeira, have taken up the case and are working to identify the individual responsible for leaking the video. Officer Palmeira has clarified the legal implications of sharing such content.
“The crimes in this case are against honor, defamation, insult, and unauthorized disclosure of sexual images without consent,” he explained.
According to Brazilian law, the unauthorized sharing of intimate images is a serious offense, punishable by up to 5 years in prison. Officer Palmeira warned that anyone who forwards or redistributes such content is also committing a crime.
“As it is a mass crime involving the internet, it is difficult to find all the perpetrators, because once it enters the network, it becomes something very complex. Anyone who receives videos of this type and continues to forward them is also committing a crime,” he added.
A Message to the Public
Maria Helena has called on the public to act responsibly and refrain from sharing the leaked video. She appealed to those who may have received the content to delete it, emphasizing the harm caused by its circulation.
The councilwoman’s plea underscores the importance of collective accountability in stopping the spread of such violations. She also expressed her gratitude to those who have supported her through this ordeal.
“Thanks to the people who are sending me messages, I am finding the strength to move forward,” she said.
A Call for Change
Maria Helena’s experience shines a light on the challenges faced by women in public life, who often become targets of digital harassment. Her courage in addressing the issue publicly serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger protections, greater awareness, and a societal shift in how such incidents are perceived.
